Harold I. Gach Memorial Scholarship

Harold I. Gach Memorial Scholarship
Harold I. Gach Memorial Scholarship offers a $750 award. Application is due in mid April and is for seniors with a minimum of a 3.2 GPA and have experienced cancer either themselves or a parent. Must be admitted to MSU.

West Bloomfield High School

Brian Falzon Book Scholarship
The Brian Falzon Book Scholarship was established by Brian’s parents in his memory to assist and encourage Lyman Briggs’ students who have demonstrated the capacity to achieve educational and professional goals. It provides the recipient with up to $300 for the purchase of course-related books. The Fall award is given to a graduate from West Bloomfield High School entering their freshman year at Lyman Briggs.

Birmingham Groves High School

Ray J. Saltzman Scholarship
An award of $1,500 is available to a qualified Birmingham Groves High School senior, who will matriculate into Michigan State University (MSU). This award is in memory of Ray Saltzman, a 1971 graduate of Groves and passionate MSU Alum.

Applications may be obtained from school counselors. Each candidate should submit a statement of 500 words or less that addresses the following:

- why the candidate is qualified for the scholarship
- school and community service and what those services accomplished
- why the candidate considers him/herself to be a responsible citizen both in school and in the greater community
- why the applicant wants to attend college and what can be gained from a college education

A completed application, MSU admission letter and comments from school and/or community service advisors or employers should be submitted to the applicant’s counselor by Friday, May 2, 2003.

The recipient will be selected on the basis of service to others, responsible citizenship, academic motivation and potential.
North Farmington High School

Kara Norman Memorial Scholarship
Amount: $2,500/1 student: additional amounts for other students may be possible. Renewable annually, i.e. $10,000 for 4 years. Must attend Michigan State University, financial need, minimum 3.0 GPA, participation in community service, extra-curricular school activities. Separate application - includes essay and two letters of recommendation from teachers or counselor.

Creative Arts Scholarship

Interested students must have been accepted to MSU and have indicated a major preference in the area which they which to compete (Art, Theatre or Creative Writing). Interested students must also submit the Creative Arts Scholarship application (available at the High School Counselor’s office).

Stipend:
ART and THEATRE: The Departments of Art and Theatre each offer four scholarships. First place awards are $3,000 scholarships for the first year of study up to 28 credits and depending on departmental approval, may be renewable for six more semesters providing seven credits per semester or 14 credits per year. The second place award is for $1,000 one-time, first-year-only, and the third and fourth place awards are $500 one-time, first-year-only awards.

CREATIVE WRITING: The Department of English offers a full tuition scholarship for the first year of study, and depending on departmental approval, may be renewable for six more semesters providing for up to 7 credits per semester or 14 credits per year.

State News Scholarship

The State News, the student newspaper at Michigan State University, awards scholarships for $2,000 annually to two high school graduates who have been accepted in MSU.

Each scholarship will be distributed in $1,000 payments per semester for eight non-summer semesters. Recipients may major in any academic program at MSU but must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA to remain eligible for the scholarship. In addition, recipients will work in paying positions at The State News after the first semester of their freshman year, either in the newsroom or in the advertising department. The recipients’ State News pay will be in addition to their scholarship.

To qualify for the scholarships, applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and have demonstrated a strong interest in high school journalism or advertising through their newspapers and/or yearbooks.

Scholarship applications are available at the High School Counselor’s office.

College of Education Alumni Scholarship

Minimum grade point average of 3.0 required. For talented students planning a career in education. Each year the College of Education Alumni Association offers a scholarship to talented freshman students who are planning a career in education. All students who meet the stated criteria may apply. The scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, is for incoming freshmen who have been formally admitted to Michigan State University and who intend to enroll in a pre-education program (elementary or secondary).

The following criteria will be considered in making scholarship decisions:
· High school grade point average (3.5 on a 4.0 scale required) (Full transcript through the junior year required along with report card for the most recent marking period.)
· College grade point average (where applicable)
· Three (3) letters of recommendation
· Description of work experience with children or youth
· Honors and extracurricular activities
· Statement explaining why you are planning a career in education. Include why you want to attend MSU and describe experience influencing your decision to enter education.

College of Education Scholarships

The College of Education offers an increasing number of scholarships for incoming freshman, undergraduate students and post-baccalaureate students which have been funded by gifts from faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the College. A list of these various scholarships is available at:
